Meet Your Supervisor: Rebeca Rocha, PhD, LCSW
Thanks to Rebeca for having fun with these.
Meet Rebeca:
1. If you could sum up your supervision style in 3 words, what would they be? Attuned, compassionate, and empowering.
2. What’s something you remember vividly from your own clinical supervision as a new therapist? I vividly remember learning how to elicit feedback from clients. This practice has been incredibly important for my professional growth and my relationships with my clients.
3. What are you most passionate about helping supervisees discover or unlearn? I love shining a light on their strengths and highlighting the areas where they are performing exceptionally well.
4. What do you wish more new therapists knew about clinical work? It may sound cliché, but being a psychotherapist is incredibly demanding. We draw deeply on our empathy and presence, often holding stories that others may never hear. Because of this, caring for ourselves—the primary instrument of our work—is essential. I have learned to take self-care seriously and have taken intentional pauses to further my education; those breaks have been vital to sustaining my longevity in the field.
5. What’s one topic you secretly love geeking out about in supervision? Anything related to trauma. I also love discussing my supervisees’ growth and successes.
6. What’s a metaphor or image that captures how you see the supervision relationship? It’s like planning a trip together—exploring where to go and considering different directions along the way.
7. What kind of clients or clinical material light you up the most? I enjoy working with clients from diverse cultures and supporting them in healing from trauma, cultural stress, and identity-related challenges.
8. Coffee shop order or comfort drink of choice? Matcha latte.
9. What’s your go-to mood-lifter when you’ve had a hard therapy day? Cuddling with my dog, Rosie, or going to a jiu-jitsu class.
10. Fill in the blank: “If you’re a new therapist who ____, we’ll probably get along great.” ...is humane, compassionate, and justice-oriented.
