August 2022 Clinical Supervision Topic: Eliciting Feedback

All year long we are eliciting feedback, but this month we get to focus on it!

I learned about the value of eliciting feedback from studying Scott D. Miller’s research in a supervision group led by Susie Snyder. I was struck by how important it is, and how little (none) training we get in it. I immediately started seeking feedback, and have waxed and waned in this practice over the years.

It’s your turn to reflect on how well you are doing this practice, and what your own beliefs are with it.

• Is it built into your modality?

• Is it something your organization requires?

• Do you have certain questions that are particularly effective?

• How do you know that your client is making progress in therapy? How do they know? Are the measurements the same?

Here’s an article I found, based on a recommendation from my sister who has an MBA and focuses a lot on leadership development. The article is based on what a boss should do to get feedback from employees, but I still found the advice relevant and concrete.

We talked about this in 2019, 2020 and 2021. (Whew! We’re getting old. Or is just me? Don’t answer that.)
