April 2024 Clinical Supervision Topic: Unconditional Positive Regard

This month we’re looking at unconditional positive regard through the lens of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). Let’s read this article, and this one. You also might like reading this description of unconditional positive regard by Carl Rogers.

I’m curious to know what beliefs you hold about your clients that make it easier to practice unconditional positive regard. Maybe it’s something like:

  • I’m not afraid of my client’s emotional world

  • Everyone is doing their very best

  • It’s my job to look for areas of growth so I need to pay close attention to that

  • My job is to emotionally accompany this person as they share their story

  • By listening closely, I’m helping my client undo their aloneness in this experience

  • I want to know what feels most true, right and authentic for my client

  • I’m not the expert

What do you think? What beliefs do you hold? Can’t wait to hear.
